Retirement Well Being: How Your Values Relate to Your Finances

Your personal values keep you motivated and help you work toward the goals you have set for yourself. When we think about getting our finances in line we often relate it to being more productive or working harder, maybe some of us consider spending less or tracking our expenses more closely.

Personal Values May Affect Your Retirement Well Being

What we don’t think about is our personal values and how they relate to our financial goals. But this is something we should be thinking about. What happens when we’ve worked harder than everyone around us for 40 years and it’s time to retire? What do we do with our money? Who do we share the rest of our lives and our savings with? What has all of the work really been for?

What you think fulfills you now, may not actually be what fulfills you later. Understanding our values and relating them to our goals gives us a better chance of living a happy and fulfilling life, before and during retirement. Financial planning is important but there is more to it than just money. Living with your values in mind will help you better create goals that are associated with the things that really matter to you. For example, maybe one of your values is time freedom. This means you want to be able to do whatever you want with your time rather than spending 40 hours a week in an office. Once you understand your values you can create goals to help support those values. So a goal to help you gain time freedom could be creating an amount of residual income each year that helps support that goal. When you start with values first, you ensure that there is passion behind your goals. This can help make them more obtainable and fulfilling.
